Dear Shaun, Just wanted to let
you know how much I admire your work. I also love
the talented voice of Rita Connolly who inspires
me no end. I live in a small country seaside town
in South Australia and I am lead female singer
in a sea shanty band. I am looking forward to
when you release more sheet music from Granuaille.
I would love to sing about Grace O'Malley and
educate those in the colonies here about her courage
and intelligence and greatness. Many Australians
have inherited some of their better traits from
Irish people such as Granuaile. Is there anywhere
you can buy the whole score ? Also, is there anyway
we can find out when you or Rita are next visiting
Australia to perform? My prize purchase from my
trip to Ireland last year was my cd of Rita Connolly
/ Granuaille - It's brilliant! God bless you both

Hi SHAUN Sorry I was rushed in
my email to you. I had one minute left in the
public library before I was logged off. Just to
repeat my message. A Sea Week Festival is taking
place in the Waterford area at the end of May
for a 10 day period. This festival is part of the
Ireland Newfoundland partnership. I am coordinating
activities in the Dunmore East area. Dunmore East
is hosting the opening of the festival. A number
of activities will take place around the fishing
communities of the Waterford/Weexford area. I
am hoping to have a musical evening celebrating
the Ireland Newfoundland connection and we would
like to put on some of the music from the Brendan
Voyage. This would be performed by Jimmy O Brien
Moran and with some musicians from WIT who are
also music teachers. My first request is to get
your permission to perform your music and my second
query is the availability of an arrangement of
this for a small group eg a quartet plus uileann
pipes. The music will be performed at St Andrews
church in Dunmore East on the weekend of May 28
or the following Whit weekend Regards Sean McGrath

Dear
Tanya, Sonya, John and Mike, many thanks for visiting.
John Harrington, many thanks for yor order. Please
be aware that 'Fill to me the Parting Glass' is
available in two completely different forms and
a different kind of [bag]pipes is used in each;
1] 'Fill to me 'bagpipes', is arranged in concert
Bb for [Scottish] Bagpipes and 2] 'Fill to me,
short version for voices' is in the key of G and
includes a part for Uilleann pipes. We have tried
hard to avoid confusion, but having more than
one version can cause problems. Anyway, I expect
you'll let me know if that's the case. As for
your suggestion re. 'An Angel will cry' from Waking
Ned, I agree it would be good to have it available;
that one is for uillean pipes, as I am sure you
know. Best wishes,
Shaun Davey

Hello Mr. Davey,
I have read your response to the question concerning
"The Parting Glass" and found it quite interesting
with the process used to create such a fine tune.
I have been looking for some time to get sheet
music for the pipes and have ordered a set from
your website. I am eager to start learning the
music. I have the soundtrack, my family and I
are never tired of listening to the meaningful
notes that you have written. I only hope that
you will find the time to offer more of "Ned Devine"
music to the public. I look forward to seeing,
"An Angel Will Cry" for the bagpipes. Until then,
thank you for your time and I will continue to
enjoy your wonderful work. John Harrington

Dear Sean Larson,[and
everyone who has expressed interest ] thanks for your
questions about 'the Parting Glass'. 1] Motivation;
in the case of this song the intention was to create
a song to suit a special or particular occasion. In
this sense it is designed to belong to the category
of music as social communication, performed to mark
certain experiences and emotions, to recognise and
celebrate them. 2] What's it about? On one level the
lyrics [traditional] are presented in the form of
a toast, as in a traditional 'drinking song'. It is
a toast of Farewell, and presented by the singer as
being his final 'glass' of the evening. There is also,
however, a deeper poignancy contained in these lyrics,
because it also clearly suggest a final parting amongst
friends [as in death], or at least the awareness that
with every parting there is the potential for the
parting to be forever. 3] How does it relate to Irish
identity and culture? I believe it relates in the
form of answers already given in 1] and 2]. Traditional
Irish songs often refer to profound emotions, be they
joy or to do with grief and loss. Musically there
is also the suggestion of a march which takes its
inspiration from the tradition of Celtic Clan Marches.
Vocal delivery depends on a vernacular 'folk' tradition
which relates to Irish culture in which a nation's
music was largely preserved through the guardianship
of a 'folk'[ie aural, non-classical] tradition. The
lyrics of 'The Parting Glass' are especially well-suited
to the film 'Waking Ned'. I first heard them sung,
to a different air, by the Irish vocal group, The
Voice Squad, who were good enough to work with us
on the recording. Liam O'Maonlai, a singer brought
up in the tradition of Sean Nos ['old style'], sings
the verses. This seems a long reply; I hope it's enough;
there could have been more. Best wishes,
Shaun Davey

Dear Bev Symmonds,
the lyrics to the song about King Arthur ['Ymadawiad
Arthur' on 'The Pilgrim' album] come from a poem in
Welsh by T Gwynne Jones. There is a translation into
english in the CD notes which I obtained in consultation
with the professor of Welsh studies in University
College, Dublin back in 1983.Re the 'plainsong' style
of the intro and conclusion, I wanted to suggest the
voice of a battle-weary army at the moment of losing
their king and leader. To echo the austerity of plainsong
seemed at the time a good way of achieving it, as
well as providing dramatic contrast with the exhultation
of King Arthur's words 'be brave, dare to suffer etc.
Best wishes,
Shaun Davey

Dear Shawn Anderson,
re. your query about the song in 'The Dead', I believe
the song you recall to have been Gretta's song, 'Michael

her narrative in the James Joce text, 'The Dead'.
Glad you saw the show. Best wishes,

Dear Mrs Anne King,
the story of Grace O'Malley [aka Granuaile] is a fascinating
one, best told in purely historical terms by the Irish
historian Anne Chambers in her biography 'Granuaile',
published by Wolfhound Press. I have a feeling Wolfhound
books may be handled by another , larger publishing
house now, but that's where to start. Get back if
this doesn't lead anywhere and I'll make more enquiries.

Greetings, My journey has brought
me here, I am searching for the music from the production
of James Joyce's "The Dead". I was fortunate to have
worked on the production in July through September
of 2000 at The Ahmanson Theater in Los Angeles, CA.
I particularly became enamored with one song, the
title of which I do not know. The Song was sung by
the female lead. She sings of her deceased Husband
singing her a song by the fire and the joy they shared
together. One of the most touching pieces I have experienced.
I do apologize for the lack of specifics, with the
passage of time, the melody and lyrics have nearly
escaped me. I do remember the certain meloncholy sensation
of which your work evoked. Any information would be
greatly appreciated. Thank you, Shawn Anderson

Hi! I love the version of "The
Parting Glass" on "Waking Ned Divine," but I can't
find the lyrics to that version's chorus anywhere.
I don't think the traditional version has the chorus
- its first line is "So fill me to the parting glass"
(or something like that) and has a slightly different
tune than the first line of the verses. Its last line
is "Goodnight and joy to you all." I would love to
be able to get the lyrics. Thank you!

I am a student at the University of New Mexico. Our

genres and music titles to write papers on. I chose

to you was what was the motivation of the song, what
was it about, and how could it relate to the Irish
identity and culture. I would be most appreciative

Been asked before
about Liam O'Maonlai's cryptic Voice-over just before
going into the singing of 'The Parting Glass'. It
was an idea of 'Waking Ned's' director, Kirk Jones,
who handed Liam some words on the back of an envelope
which Liam translated into his best West Kerry Irish.
Roughly they are 'May God bless the boat and all who
sail in her'.

I discovered Ballykissangel for the first time
here in the States a few months ago. While tracking
down more information on the program at the
BBC's web-site I discovered you were the composer
of the music. I enjoy the music thoroughly.
I ordered your CD, Ballykissangel, from Amazon

that the music is from the first series of Ballykissangel.
Can you tell me if the main theme from the second

Dear Mr. Shaun
Davey, I own a copy of the LP recording "The
Brendan Voyage" which I have enjoyed listening
to for many years. I am writing to ask your
permission to include one tune composition from
the recording in a book of traditional dance
music that I am publishing. The book will have
about 350 tunes, with an initial printing of
1000 copies. It will be the fourth title I have
self-published since 1975, the others being
“Irish Traditional Fiddle Music,” “New England
Fiddler’s Repertoire,” “101 Polkas,” and “Marshall’s
Scottish Melodies.” The new book will contain
mostly traditional, public-domain fiddle music
from New England, Ireland, Scotland, Cape Breton,
and the north of England. The tunes have been
selected with an eye for dance suitability and
their relative obscurity (minimal previous publication).
Arrangements of these traditional tunes and
the chord suggestions are my own, based on thirty
years’ experience as a contra dance musician.
In addition to the traditional tunes, I would
like to include a limited number of recent compositions
by contemporary musicians. May I have permission
to include your tune entitled: "Water Under
the Keel" from The Brendan Voyage? I would include
your name and a copyright credit alongside the
tune. In addition, if you have a CD or cassette
recording that includes the tune, I will include
that information in the book. When the book
comes out, I will send you two complementary
copies. Thank you for considering my request,
and I look forward to hearing from. Sincerely,

I used to have
the cassette tape as well as the CD of Granuaile.
I seem to remember that there was one song on
the tape that wasn't on the CD, while the CD had
one that the tape was missing. Unfortunately,
the tape wandered off and the person I thought
I lent it to denies all knowledge of it. I can't
find the tape listed for sale online. Am I correct
in remembering that there was this difference
between tape and CD? If so, what track appeared
on the tape differently than on the CD? I remember
really liking the extra track on each.

Hello. My husband
is from county Mayo and I am only part Irish.
We live in Vancouver, Canada and first heard about
you by watching the movie, "Waking Ned Devine".
We very much enjoy the music you write and perform.
I am writing to ask you a question. We have seven
children (the oldest is 21). They are a band trying
to make their first demo or CD. The fourteen year
old loves the song "Factory Girl" and we want
to put it on their demo but do not want to infringe
any copyright you have on the arrangement. If
we sent you the proposed version for their demo
is that the only way to make sure it does not
infringe your copyright or is there an easier
way? Thank you for reading our email. Yours sincerely

use of the phenomenal and inspiring 'May we never
have to say goodbye' in the months ahead, most
immediately with the children of the Down's Syndrome

us in July. Thank you for the uplifting melody
and lyric and the powerful message. We look forward
excitedly to the publishing of the score...? so
we can attempt it live. Thank you so much for
this and all your inspiring song and composition.

Further to previous

Dear shaun Davey,
in 1987 I recorded a program for the music station
in Los angeles: KUSC.At that time Radio Drama
had died in the United States and I had been trying
to revive it with many of my contemporaries from
the heydey of network radio drama. The then manager
of that station was the first to give us a chance. And
so I recorded "Treasure Island" with Dan O'Herlihy,
Sean Mc clory,Jeanette Nolan and many other great
radio actors.I was told I could play any music
in the station's library and so I scored the show
with some of your most fabulous Brendan's Voyage.
I have tried over the years to reach you and get
your permission to do something with this tape.
Recently a company by the name of Oasis has taken
on some of our children's shows, thru an agent,
I recently contacted. they have asked forTreasure
island along with nine other shows. This has been
a very long time coming for us.About seventeen
or eighteen years of backbreaking work for some
of us.We were incorporated in 1999 in the state
of california as a non-profit Corporation.The
stars all work for $150.00 per show And the musicians
I have hired have scored the shows for about the
same. Some I have paid three of up to seven hundred. But
that wasrare, and tops We were not getting enough
from National Public Radio to pay for the shows,
so I have been funding out of my own pocket for
years.I also met Paddy Moloy about the time I
was putting Treasure Island together. My husband,
Sean Mc Clory (from the Abbey theatre)was introducing
The cheiftains as master of ceremonies at The
Irish Fair that year and I asked Paddy Molloy
if we could use some of their music to make bridges
and to identify the sailors and pirates as Irish,
which had not been done before with this story.
He gave me permission verbally. So now I must
find him to getwritten permission. Incidentally
we recorded our version of The Dead some years
ago and I brought many of the cast from John Huston's
film in to do it. Sean Mc Clory my husband was
featured in the film and I did some of the casting
for Mr. Huston. Please contact me as soon as possible.Sincerely,
Peggy Webber Mc Clory

Irish music on the syllabus for junior and leaving

voyage and the waking ned music. I am currently

3 weeks left at my current school in stillorgan.

Dear Shaun: About
two years ago, I contacted you through your publisher,
Tara. I was about to be married, and was seeking
a copy of the written score to the Maggie and
Finn theme in "Waking Ned Divine" for use as the
processional. You graciously faxed over a hand-written
score, noting that I needed to transcribe a copy
of the guitar part in addition to the music you
sent. I was able to do that, and ultimately had
a five-piece ensemble play the theme as me and
my partner strolled down the aisle. When the time
came to play the piece, the local musicians hammed
it up a bit too much (so now when we listen to
it again we prefer to listen to your CD), but
that piece of music will always have a special
place in our hearts. After two and a half years,
we still feel like we're on a honeymoon. Listening
to your music never fails to rekindle the love
and joy we felt that day. Thanks always. Marc

Your music (both
Shaun and Rita) has inspired the naming of two
of my boats: the first, in 1991, "Granuaile",
a 37.5' sailboat, and now, January 2003, "The
Brendan", a 20' Shamrock fishing boat. I am in
the process of replacing some of my CDs (first
lost by theft in California, and then again the
replacements lost in transit following our three
year stay in the British Virgin Islands). Would
like to get "The Brendan Voyage" boxed set with
the Tim Severin book, but can only find on the
amazon.co.uk and irish.music sites. Are you aware
if this is available in the USA? If not, I certainly
can find the CD and book separately. Also need
to replace my Granuaile, Relief of Derry Symphony
and Pilgrim CD, all lost with all of my other
music collection in shipment back to the US. Thanks
for all of your great work in incorporating traditional
instruments and music into fine orchestral works.

I've loved "Newfoundland"
since first hearing it some 7-8 years ago, years
after its initial publication. I did a rather
wretched version of it with all credits to Shaun
Davey & Liam O'Flynn, and I've linked to "Brendan
Voyage" on Amazon.com so anyone wanting to hear
the real thing can buy it. Mine isn't for sale,
and it was only an unfinished experiment anyway!
Just FYI, credit to the artists! The page is at
http://www.mp3.com/paula_k__lynch Cheers & hope
you get a few sales out of it. Paula

I am artistic co-director
for LedaSwan, Inc., a nonprofit music & dance
performance company in the USA. I would like to
choreograph The Deer's Cry and perform it to live
choral accompaniment in Oxford, MS and San Jose,
CA in Feb, 03. Of course I am hoping sheet music
will be available for purchase before then. Is
there any way I may negotiate rights to arrange
it and use it for this purpose in the meantime?
Thank you for your consideration (and for your
beautiful music.) JL

We regret to have
to inform those of you requesting sheet music
that at present there is no sheet music for any
of Shaun's compositions available. We do hope,
however to be able to rectify this situation at
the end of 2002.

Dear Shaun, I'm
Joaquín and I write from Spain (Alicante). I like
very much music you make. The motive of this e-mail
is around music. I explain you, I play galician
bagpipes and a few days ago I receipt a uilleann
pipe. Also I play clarinet iin a classical music
band. I would like to obtain The Brendan Voyage
orchestral music to make an arrange for band (my
band). The only thing I can offer you is my work
and the band's archive (is quite good). My idea
es make the arrange and present for the fist time.
I'll try to negociate to the council for your
coming. It's difficult, the town only have 3600
persons. We'll see. Sorry for my english, ¿What
you think about it?.
