Shaun Davey
Shaun Davey is one of Ireland's leading professional composers. In recent years he has composed and produced scores for the BBC TV series 'Ballykissangel' [BAFTA nominated and TRIC award for best signature theme], received an Ivor Novello award for his music for the BBC film 'The Hanging Gale' [also BAFTA nominated], composed and produced music for feature films 'The Tailor of Panama', 'Waking Ned', 'Twelfth Night' [Ivor Novello nominated], and for the Hallmark TV film of 'David Copperfield'.
In the USA he received a Tony nomination for his music for 'James Joyce's The Dead'. In UK Theatre he has been composer to many Royal Shakespeare Company productions, including 'The Tempest', 'King Lear', 'A Winters Tale' and 'Pericles'. Other theatre credits; 'Fair Maid of the West', 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' [RSC], ' Steward of Christendom' [Royal Court], 'Lady from the Sea' [Almeida], 'Skellig' [Young Vic] 'The Well of the Saints' and 'Observe the Sons of Ulster marching towards the Somme' [Abbey Theatre, Dublin].
As a composer of concert works Shaun Davey's approach is melodic, often large scale and in many cases features traditional [folk] instruments and performers. He began in 1980 with 'The Brendan Voyage', a fusion of orchestral and Irish traditional styles with an uilleann piper as soloist. He continued this genre with 'The Pilgrim', 'Granuaile', and 'The Relief of Derry Symphony', all of which have featured in recent concerts with the RTENSO at the National Concert Hall, Dublin.
Shaun Davey also enjoys working in the field of film documentary and as composer of music for special occasions; in 2003 he composed the music for the Dublin Special Olympics featuring the choral anthem 'May we never have to say goodbye'. This was performed in Croke Park Stadium before a live audience of 80,000. In 2007 he composed music to celebrate the arrival of a replica Viking longship in the National Museum of Ireland.
