Ballykissangel suite; [2005] duration 19 minutes
Developed by Shaun Davey in 2005 from the main original themes of the successful BBC Television series, now well-known on TV around the world. Shaun Davey received a BAFTA nomination for his work as composer for the series [during the first three years of its production], as well as a TRIC award for the signature theme. The suite is in five movements, scored with radio concert orchestras in mind but would suit a symphony orchestra in lighter mood. The music generally features flute, clarinet and bassoon as principal, character voices, is for the most part playful and lighthearted in tone; although, like the series, at times concerned with more thought-provoking moments in life.
1st movement; Exposition of the main themes developed from the series signature tune, a joyful, melody- and rhythm-driven movement. featuring the woodwind.
2nd movement; a theme of unrequited love, led by the clarinet, taken up by flute and bassoon.
3rd movement; the longer, central movement deals in general with the theme of exuberant mischief-making, and the contest between the community and the individual.
4th movement; The theme of sudden, unexpected loss. It concludes with a lament led by clarinet and solo cello.
5th Movement; A sense of recovery and a return to the celebration of life, concluding with a reel in full-blooded Irish traditional style.
